2012 SRCA Conference - Installing Tile Hips:
Ross Gibson, age 60, demonstrates how to use his grandfather's old hand-operated standing seam roofing tools to make the double-lock standing seams for this traditional style of metal roofing. Ross uses copper sheets to demonstrate the tools at the Slate Roofing Contractors Association of North America, Inc., annual conference on September 29, 2012, in Grove City, Pennsylvania, USA.

Chris Short, Short Slate - Chris and his crew installed a German-style slate roof on a small building at the conference.
Ornamental Slate Wall Cladding:
Liam Tower, Slate Affair - Liam installed an ornamental slate exterior wall on the same small building that Short Slate will be roofing. See publicity.
Spanish Slate Quarries:
John Chan, The Durable Slate Company - John recently visited the Del Carmen and the Matacuta quarries in Spain and toured the areas where CUPA and Samaca are located. He did a Powerpoint presentation.
Traditional Standing Seam Metal Roofing:
Ross Gibson - Ross gave a live presentation on hand-built standing seam copper roofs using the method taught to him by his father and grandfather using the tools they used. He recently gave the presentation to members of the Early American Industries Association.
Concave Curved Copper Standing Seam:
Chris Paulin, Paulin Slate and Copper - Chris and Anthony fabricated and installed a curved copper double lock standing seam roof.
Soldering Copper Using Various Soldering Tools:
Brent Ulisky, Joseph Jenkins, Inc. - Brent supplied propane, acetylene, electric and portable gas powered soldering irons as well as hand irons. Try them out on some scrap sheet copper!
Using a Shrinker-Stretcher to Curve Copper Standing Seam Roofing:
Orion Jenkins, Joseph Jenkins, Inc. - Orion showed a Powerpoint demonstration of an eyebrow dormer of his own design that he built and slated with Vermont extra heavy slates. The presentation culminated with a walk to the physical site, only five minutes away.
Roof and Jobsite Safety:
Grant Meloun, The Durable Slate Company - Grant conducted a Powerpoint presentation updating us on OSHA roof safety.
Tile Roofing with Snow Rails:
John Crookston, Upright Inc. - John showed us by Powerpoint a large ceramic tile reroof project.
Friday night wine and cheese reception catered by Bella Cucina, with entertainment provided by Cicely Winders solo music artist followed by Moses and the Trash Bandits 3-piece rock and roll band.
Saturday lunch catered by Laurie's Country Kitchen.
About the Conference: Looks like we will have a good turnout of slate roofing professionals and interested parties gathering together in order to exchange knowledge and experience, tips, and tricks of the trade, over a weekend intended for both learning and fun.
Location: Northwestern Pennsylvania at the SRCA home office site, 143 Forest Lane, Grove City, PA 16127, about 65 miles north of Pittsburgh, PA. There is a map above.
Presenters: (see above) We have a variety of confirmed interactive presentations including professional copper work, German style slating, slate siding with detailed designing, hooked slate installation, ceramic V-tile hips, basic standing seam metal roofing, concave curved copper standing seam, soldering, using a shrinker-stretcher, eyebrow dormer, and various Powerpoint presentations including tile roofing with snow rails, guarantees and warranties, and other presentations yet to be announced. We will also be holding our annual Members’ Meeting as well as a Board Meeting.
Airports: Greater Pittsburgh is your best bet, but Youngstown, Cleveland and Akron (OH), Erie (PA) and Franklin (PA) are options. Allow an hour and a half to drive from the Pittsburgh airport to the site. There is plenty of parking space.
Camping on Site: 143 wooded acres are available with a deep 6-acre quarry lake for fishing, swimming and canoeing. No electric or hose hookups. Children must be supervised at the lake at all times.
Hotels: The two nearest ones are only 3 minutes away (see below). There’s the Super 8 Motel (Ph: 814-786-8375), and Comfort Inn (Ph: 814-786-7901) in Barkeyville, PA. Call for room rates. If you want a hotel room, reserve it soon!
Bring Your Spouse or Guest at No Additional Charge: During the day there’s camping, swimming and fishing, weather permitting. Or shop at the Grove City Premium Outlets, 20 minutes away, rated as one of the top 20 outlet centers in the United States. There's also Historic Franklin, 20 minutes away and New Wilmington Amish Country just a half hour away as is Historic Oil City, birth place of the oil industry, including Oil Creek State Park and Drake Well Museum. Or engage in the SRCA workshops. In the evening there will be live music, food, beverages and general kicking back.
Evening Entertainment: We have live bands and musicians booked for the conference after hours. Friday evening we’ll have a wine and cheese reception with music provided by guitar master Chuck Moses and the Trash Bandits and a number of surprise musical guests. The warm-up music is from Cicely Winders.
On Saturday night we’ll break out some catered food and a keg or two and be entertained by the 6-piece band Broken Pick under the full moon. Lead fiddle player and vocalist Ron Boy, a home builder by day, is perhaps best know for dancing on the bar while fiddling at night. The warm-up musicians are Ben and Cathy Ginter.
Fund Raising Auction: Saturday night, bring something to auction off! All proceeds will benefit the SRCA. Suggestions: tools, books, gift certificates, desserts, beverages, use your imagination! We will do a live auction conducted by Joe Jenkins and other volunteers.
